Eraserheads: Overdrive

Definitely this is one of my favorite songs of Eheads. Just listening to this song will make you see the roads while having a good time. A joyride with friends and having the time of your life enjoying the sight. I can see the fields, mountains, trees, sky, the sweetest things life has to offer. Its fun to just hop in and feel the wind through your face. Its really fun to enjoy life. Hearing this song makes me think of the little things. Little things that can make us smile and happy.   So come and let’s have a joyride.

Magda-drive ako hanggang Baguio
Magda-drive ako hanggang Bicol
Magda-drive ako hanggang Batangas
Tapos magsu-swimming do'n sa beach

Isasama ko ang girlfriend ko
Isasama ko kahit sinong may gusto
Kahit may kasama s'yang aso
Basta't meron s'yang baong sariling buto

Magdadala ako ng pagkain
Burger, fries, tapsilog at siopao
Magda-drive ako hanggang Visayas
Magda-drive ako hanggang sa Mindanao

Magda-drive ako buong taon
Magda-drive ako habambuhay
Magda-drive ako hanggang buwan
Please, please lang turuan n'yo akong mag-drive

Gusto kong matutong mag-drive (kahit na wala akong kotse)
Gusto kong matutong mag-drive (kahit na walang lisensya)
Mag-drive, drive, drive
Mag-drive...
Mag-drive...
Drive...
Drive...
Drive...
Drive...

Eraserheads: Alapaap

Buksan mo aking mata. Di mo ba nakikita. Ako’y lumilipad at nasa langit na. The line in the song Alapaap that brought controversy wherein Sen.Tito Sotto III allegedly pointed out that the song promote drug use.  In response, the Eraserheads issued a statement saying that the song is not for the promotion of drug use but a way to express there love for freedom. The meaning of the word Alapaap, is clouds. More like associated to sky or being high. However the allegations has no real basis  and the call for banning the song was fruitless.

May isang umaga, na tayo'y magsasama
Haya at halina sa alapaap
O, anong sarap, haa...

Hanggang sa dulo ng mundo
Hanggang maubos ang ubo
Hanggang gumulong ang luha
Hanggang mahulog ang tala

Chorus:
Masdan mo ang aking mata
'Di mo ba nakikita
Ako ngayo'y lumilipad at nasa langit na
Gusto mo bang sumama?

Adlib:

Pap-pa-rap... pap-pa-rap-pa...
Pa pa pa pa (papapapa...)
La-la-la... oooh hoo hoo...

Ang daming bawal sa mundo
(Ang daming bawal sa mundo)
Sinasakal nila tayo
(Sinasakal nila tayo)
Buksan ang puso at isipan
(Buksan ang puso at isipan)
Paliparin ang kamalayan
(Paliparin)

Chorus 2:
Masdan mo ang aking mata
'Di mo ba nakikita
Ako'y lumilipad at nasa alapaap na
Gusto mo bang sumama?

Gusto mo bang (gusto mo bang)
Gusto mo bang (gusto mo bang)
Gusto mo bang (gusto mo bang)
Gusto mo bang (gusto mo bang)
Gusto mo bang (gusto mo bang)
Gusto mo bang (gusto mo bang)
Gusto mo bang (gusto mo bang)
Gusto mo bang (gusto mo bang)
Sumama?

Eraserheads: With a Smile

A song which truly inspired many listeners, Also a famous one from the Eraserheads. The lyrics reminds me of the happy times. Yes, eventhough obviously it’s a love song still you can help to smile while hearing the chorus or the part when they sang “do do do do do do.” It’s a song of hope for everybody when the times get worse. For me I can’t help thinking of the huge trees beside the road with the soft wind blowing on it and me just sitting on the bench having a peaceful time. Perfect song when thinking of the happy times especially when you are with someone special. Truly in life the best things are the simple moments that you share with a smile.

Lift your head, baby, don't be scared

Of the things that could go wrong along the way
You'll get by with a smile
You can't win at everything but you can try.

Baby, you don't have to worry
'Coz there ain't no need to hurry
No one ever said that there's an easy way
When they're closing all their doors
And they don't want you anymore
This sounds funny but I'll say it anyway.

Girl I'll stay through the bad times
Even if I have to fetch you everyday
I'll get by if you smile
You can never be too happy in this life.

In a world where everybody
Hates a happy ending story
It's a wonder love can make the world go round
And don't let it bring you down
And turn your face into a frown
You'll get along with a little prayer and a song.

(Too doo doo...)
Let me hear you sing it
(Too doo doo...)

In a world where everybody
Hates a happy ending story
It's a wonder love can make the world go round
But don't let it bring you down
And turn your face into a frown
You'll get along with a little prayer and a song.

Lift your head, baby, don't be scared
Of the things that could go wrong along the way
You'll get by with a smile
Now it's time to kiss away those tears goodbye

(Too doo doo...)
Let me hear you sing it
(Too doo doo...)

Eraserheads: The Making of a Legend

Ely Buendia, Raymund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro, and Buddy Zabala. The Philippine Fab Four. The men that created and started one of the Philippines most influential bands. The Eraserheads. It started in University of the Philippines Diliman (they were still in college) when Ely Buendia posted an announcement that he was looking for new bandmates and coincidentally only the three showed up in the auditions. Raymund was the first to show up having jammed with Ely before and Buddy and Marcus next. Raymund was actually auditioning for bass and Buddy was for the drums. But through out the auditions they decided to switch places and then the band was formed. Ely was on the vocals, Marcus on the lead guitar, Buddy on bass, and Raymund on drums. They decided to call the band Eraserheads from the movie Eraserheads by David Lynch.

Because of Ely’s somehow unique voice which as of today no other vocalist has been able to imitate fully, his voice is something that you cannot easily forget, they were not successful in doing cover songs. Eventhough they are able to perform on gigs and in clubs in Metro Manila, they were not doing well so they decided to write their own songs. There songs had slowly gained popularity in the UP campus and steadily gained fans until its song was recognized outside the school. The song “Pare Ko” was the most popular one.

The popularity had pushed the band to record a demo and shopped it to record labels, radio stations, and clubs but was rejected. However, the songwriting of Ely was  noticed by the director of BMG Philippines in which Ely works as a partime copywriter. The songs of the band was reviewed and listend by Vic Valenciano, the director, and saw a promising light from it. And in 1992, the band Eraserheads was signed up. In 1993, the released their first album Ultraelectromagneticpop which became a huge success with the song, “PARE KO” featured in it.

And with the way they have revolutionized the new wave of OPM band, more new bands with their unique music had come to the stage. They are no doubt the most influential band in the history of Philippine Music. Truly a legend.

Eraserheads: Pare Ko

Pare Ko was the first song of Eraserheads that was widely recognized first even before they have a recording deal. It started in the campus of UP Diliman and slowly spread outside the school This also had taken much attention because of the vulgar words used in the chorus of the song however it only made it more famous. This is the song sang by many teenagers and young adults of that time because of the very catchy beat and lyrics.

The lyrics tells us the emotion of a guy who is telling a story to his Pare (friend) about a college girl he knew and fell inlove with. The story of a bittersweet love starting with friendship and ending as only friends. He was asking his Pare to be just their for him as he fights the pain of being dumped.

This is the lyric video of the song and at the bottom was the live performance in them last concert of Eraserheads as a band.

Hanggang kelan maghihintay

Eraserheads: Cutterpillow

The albums of Eraserheads.
The first album Ultraelectromagnetic pop was a huge success which turned sextuple platinum. Its hit songs were Pare Ko which was very controversial because of the chorus “Di ba’tang ina”. Several groups tried to ban this song with no avail. However they sanitized it to a Walang Hiyang Pare Ko which transformed the chorus to “Di ba walang hiya”. Other songs that became popular was Ligaya which was a very catchy song and Toyang. This marked the new era of band songs. They saved the OPM band era which was losing its popularity. The instant fame of Eraserheads brought new hope to the OPM band which started to grow in numbers again. From that moment the Eheads were honored to be called the Philippine Fab Four.

The second album was called CiRcuS and as expected was smashingly popular. The songs in the album was more on the life of the Eheads after they made their successful debut. Because their songs were alternative and melodic they were able to even top the OPM Ballads at that time. Fans of OPM Ballad songs turned to the Eheads songs which contributed more their success. The band established its name as good songwriters and musicians. The songs Alapaap, With a Smile, Magasin, and Kailan were the top songs in the album. Alapaap was the most controversial because of the lyrics of the song which tends to be viewed as the effects of using drugs. However, the songwriter contradicted this allegations and explained that the songs message was for freedom and not drug use.

The most successful of all albums which also has the most famous Eheads song with it was “Cutterpillow”. It sold millions of copies even before hitting the record stores. The most phenomenal album in the Philippine music history. The song Ang Huling El Bimbo has placed its name as one of the most popular songs in the Philippines. At that time, Eraserheads has reached the top of its popularity. Eraserheadmania was the thing.

Fruitcake was released as Christmas album which most of its song are for Christmas.

The next album was Sticker Happy which gathered controversy of who is the woman sitting with the piano. The piano is the property of Eraserheads which is full of stickers. It was burned in their last concert, The Final Set to represent that this is the last time the Eheads would be a band. The songs in Sticker Happy was somewhat different from their past music because they had emphasize the use of instrument that they have brought from New York although the signature Eraserheads sound was still there. The naked girl is Joey Mead, then was a VJ.

Natin99 was the sixth album. It didn't catch much of the attention because what the listeners can hear is each individuals song and not as a band.

Carbon Stereoxide was the last album with Ely with them. The feature song in this album was Maskara. The band disbanded in 2002.

An album called Aloha Milkyway was released in 1998 as an Asian-wide Region release which contains the Eheads famous songs like "Ang Huling El Bimbo" and "With A Smile". It gained recognition in Asia and the single Julie Tearjerky reached the top charts in Indonesia.

Eraserheads: Ang Huling El Bimbo

One of the greatest song they had ever made and probably the best. It has achieved a legendary status in the Philippines and almost all Filipinos know and recognize this song even the new generation. It is one off the most requested song in the videoke bars and everyone would sing with you as this song is played. It has been years since this song was released and still its popularity doesn't fade.  This song’s title came from the dance called “El Bimbo”.

Huling El Bimbo is the title of the song. One of the greatest songs ever created. The song tells the story of a man’s unrequited love his childhood friend. The story ended tragically. This song made history and records in the Philippines and made way internationally. The melody of the song is still hummed by Filipino’s everywhere. One of the “undying songs.”

The story is about a girl which the singer knows when they were a child. They used to dance after classes in her house. This made him fall for her and anticipated their dance everyday. A story about an innocent love. in which they hold hands during the dance and how his heart learned true love. Sadly they parted ways when they grew up. He learned that she became a dishwasher and was accidentally been run over in a dark alley. the last part of the song expresses the man's sorrow over the death of the girl and how she can only dance with her in his dreams. The song implies that the man's love would still remain forever. Here is the music video of the song and hope you'll be inspire as millions of Filipino were.

Kamukha mo si Paraluman
No'ng tayo ay bata pa
At ang galing-galing mong sumayaw
Mapa-Boogie man o Chacha

Ngunit ang paborito
Ay pagsayaw mo ng El Bimbo
Nakakaindak, nakakaaliw
Nakakatindig balahibo

REFRAIN 1

CHORUS

Naninigas aking katawan
'Pag umikot na ang plaka
Patay sa kembot ng bewang mo
At pungay ng 'yong mga mata

Lumiliwanag ang buhay
Habang tayo'y magkaakbay
At dahan-dahang dumudulas

(CHORUS)

La la la la, la la, la la, la la la

Lumipas ang maraming taon
'Di na tayo nagkita
Balita ko'y may anak ka na
Ngunit walang asawa

Tagahugas ka raw
Ng pinggan sa may Ermita
At isang gabi'y nasagasaan
Sa isang madilim na eskinita, hah

REFRAIN 3

(CHORUS 2x)

CODA
La la la la, la la, la la, la la la [2x]
